emlie Sande question (500)
With reference to Emeli Sande’s “Heaven”, how realistic are the representations offered by the video? In your answer, you should consider the social and cultural context.
Emeli Sande's music video "heaven" is quite realistic as it is based in Bethnal Green as its setting,in the video you can see people going about their day to day life which links to the representation of street life, gender, ethnicity and spirituality. To me Emeli's lyrics are about acceptance , hope and forgiveness which is heavily connoted in the music video and the images presented within it.
Emeli's representation of of spirituality/religion is is very realistic , this is due to people genuinely relying on religion for guidance. As i mentioned before her lyrics convey hope, forgiveness and acceptance, religion can provide these things for many people. The mid shot of Emile and the clear blue sky connotes acceptance and to me represents a place like heaven, linking to the song title. it connotes acceptance because the sky is clear and bright blue, there are no clouds, clouds can be used as a symbol of judgement and sadness. This shot is significant as it reoccurs throughout the music video as a reminder that we are accepted no matter the struggle. Religion is consistently used as a symbol /beacon of hope for multiple people and i think the music video really grasps this , it demonstrates the pain in people's hearts through their facial expressions and the majority of the time there is a symbol of religion close to them. For instance, there is a mid shot of a girl by a peice of angel wing graffiti behind her on the wall and she looks very troubled, the angel wings behind her represent that although things may not be going right now she is still looked out for and accepted.
The music video is quite diverse which is very realistic as it is based in London. The music video feautures people of different ethnic backgrounds ,of all ages. Showing diversity , leads away from stereotypes that certain races are less successful than others, it portrays all people struggle with social issues and being good on a day to day basis and remaining hopeful.Everybody is the same , judged the same , no matter the religion people still reely on god for guidance
